Houthi militias loot locust swarms' cars, locusts spread in Sana'a, Amran areas

For the second day in a row, desert locust swarms continue to threaten agricultural crops in a number of areas in Sana'a and Amran provinces in light of specialists' inability, including the Houthi militias at the Agriculture Ministry as well to combat the locust swarms.

According to local sources, the desert locust swarms spread on Saturday in a number of valleys and fertile agricultural fields, and Khat land in some districts of Sana'a and Amran provinces.

Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Sana'a revealed that the Houthi militias had disrupted the Center of Locust control and taken the Center's equipment for control operations.

Hasan AbdulBaqi said that the group looted the spraying cars as well as other equipment to combat the desert locusts.  

The Houthi militias looted 180 cars specialized in uprooting desert locusts, in addition, the Houthi militias confiscated the center's salaries and its operational expenses.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in Sana'a, controlled by the Houthi militias, announced the arrival of locust swarms in Sana'a and Amran provinces.

The armed militias sent memos to international organizations for the purpose of obtaining additional material assistance under title confronting locusts and reducing their risks to food security.

U.N. reports have warned earlier that millions of locusts could attack Yemen and threaten to destroy crops. According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), locust swarms swallow "the equivalent of 35,000 people a day , And can fly 90 miles per day."
