The United Nations is urging donors to quickly pay and provide new funding to its agencies in Yemen.

“More than a million Yemeni women now need money, or they will lose access to life-saving reproductive health services, putting their lives and those of their children at risk,” said Dr. Natalia Kanim, UNFPA Executive Director.

She joined the  Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Liz Grande, in her appeal to donors to "provide funds as soon as possible."

According to a statement by Dr. Natalia Kanim, by September 2019, UNFPA will be forced to close 175 of the 268 health facilities currently supported by reproductive health services.

"This poses a direct threat to more than a million pregnant and lactating women who need immediate treatment for acute malnutrition and more medical assistance," the statement said.

UNFPA also confirmed that the purchase of medicines had already stopped, and 14 safe places and four specialized mental health facilities for women had been closed.

UNFPA says a woman dies every two hours due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth.  Another 20 women suffer preventable injuries, infections or disabilities.  "This is the reality faced by some 6 million women and adolescents of reproductive age in Yemen."
