Saudi Arabia has agreed to a limited ceasefire in several areas of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, as part of a wider effort to end a four-year conflict that has threatened a regional war.

A Yemeni government official and another diplomat told Bloomberg that attempts were under way to expand the truce

Saudi officials were not immediately available for comment

The agency said this was in response to the announcement by the Houthi militia to stop targeting Riyadh days ago

A well-informed Yemeni diplomat said there were serious discussions going on over the duration and scope of the ceasefire and whether it would cover all the territory controlled by the Houthis or only the capital

He said the discussions were mediated by Western countries, adding that they would be a first step towards a complete ceasefire or a complete halt to air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition.
