Russia's Deputy Minister of Communications Alexei Sokolov said that his country completed a series of tests yesterday (Monday) to ensure its ability to keep Internet services in the event of having to disconnect from the global network.

The several-day examination of networks specifically designed for this purpose comes after the "sovereign Internet" bill presented in November in response to what Russia calls the "aggressive nature" of America's national cyber security strategy.

This law requires the participation of state-run institutions and security services, as well as telecommunications companies and messaging and email application operators, in tests that have no effect on regular Internet users, according to Reuters.

"Our goal is to provide Internet services that are not disrupted under any circumstances," Sokolov said in a press briefing.
