The European Commission has announced the allocation of $ 382 million, from its initial annual humanitarian budget for Yemen and Syria for 2020.

The UNHCR, in a press release, on Tuesday, said that the humanitarian budget, amounting to 900 million euros (997 million US dollars), will be allocated to help more than 80 countries cope with the long wars in Africa, the Middle East, acute food crises and humanitarian.

It noted that European aid will focus on delivering humanitarian aid to those most in need in recipient countries.

The European Commission announced at the beginning of last November to allocate 79 million euros to support public services in Yemen, in particular the health, food and education sectors.

The Commission indicated that a portion of the aid will be allocated to the Yemeni people, through local councils, to encourage investment in the health sector, drinking water, food and hygiene.

It noted that aid will simultaneously support the private sector and strengthen the power of small enterprises in many areas, such as agriculture.

According to the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Nevin Memica, the European Union pays special attention to supporting Yemen due to the catastrophic repercussions of the war that has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and the destruction of livelihoods since 2015.

Mimika said earlier that "Yemen is a country torn apart by conflict and destroyed by violence, but it is also a country full of resilience and entrepreneurship."

"The conflict in Yemen has led to the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world ... hunger, poverty and the spread of preventable diseases at the present time have reached unprecedented rates," he added.

He explained that the priority of the European Union is focused on securing medium and long-term opportunities for Yemeni citizens by preventing the collapse of institutional and economic structures ... as the Yemeni people depend on what remains of the basic services in the livelihoods and preserve the remaining social fabric of the country.

According to European statistics, the humanitarian aid provided by the European Union to the Yemeni people since 2015 until the end of 2019 amounted to 440 million euros.
