The process of obtaining a passport from the Immigration and Passport Authority in Aden (southern Yemen) has become a daunting task, costing the applicant a lot of time, money and trouble.

On a daily basis, in front of the gates of the Authority’s headquarters in the city of Crater, long lines of citizens requesting passports are waiting, waiting for their entry date to complete the official procedures, before they obtain the documents to receive the passport.

The complex transactions in the interest, in addition to the large turnout of citizens, resulted in the emergence of active brokers, in conducting routine transactions in return for large sums of money determined by (the passport broker).

In this context, an old man spoke to Newsyemen about his suffering and waiting in the queue, in front of the Immigration and Passports Authority, as well as about the "brokers" by saying: More than one "broker" offered me the procedure of obtaining the passport in exchange for a large sum of money.

He stressed that the guardians of the Authority also impose sums of money on passport-seekers in exchange for facilitating their entry from the gates.

Another citizen said that he incurred the suffering of travel from the governorate of Taiz to Aden, in order to obtain a passport, pointing out that he was surprised to find brokers handling transactions in exchange for financial sums.

He added that one of the brokers offered to perform the necessary transactions in the Immigration and Passports Department in exchange for a sum of money, but he refused and preferred to follow the procedures himself.
