On Thursday, the World Bank said it would provide $ 26 million and $ 900,000 to Yemen in emergency financing to help WHO and local authorities improve capacity to detect, contain and treat coronavirus.

Yemen has not confirmed any cases of coronavirus, but is seen as particularly vulnerable because the five-year war has brought its health system to the brink of collapse and created one of the world's worst man-made humanitarian disasters.

"The pandemic poses unique risks to public health in Yemen, given the weakness of the health system and the extreme vulnerability of the population," said Bank Director Marina Weiss.

According to the World Bank, Corona virus test kits in Yemen are available for only 600 people, and there are no doctors in 18 percent of the country's directorates.

The World Bank announced yesterday that its Executive Board approved one billion and 900 million dollars of initial emergency funding to support the response to the emerging coronavirus in 25 countries, adding that it is moving quickly with regard to projects in 40 other countries.

According to UN reports, about 24 million of the population of 29 million in Yemen need humanitarian assistance, and most health care workers have not been paid for more than two years.

Reports of international organizations indicate that the coronavirus can reach Yemen, and that it will have devastating consequences for the stressful health system, as the Houthi militia coup against the state has paralyzed Yemen's ability to respond to any outbreak.
