UN Security Council Statement on Yemen

The UN Security Council welcomed the announcement by the Arab coalition of a comprehensive cease-fire in Yemen for a period of two weeks, which could be extended, in order to face the consequences of the Corunavirus outbreak.

In a statement issued on Friday night, the members of the UN Security Council endorsed the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the parties in Yemen to cease the immediate ceasefire, focus on reaching a political settlement through negotiation, and make every possible effort to confront the Coronavirus.

 They also welcomed the positive response of the Yemeni government to the call for a ceasefire, and called on the Houthis to make similar commitments without delay.

The members of the Security Council also encouraged the two parties concerned in Yemen to continue their cooperation with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, in order to reach a political settlement led by Yemen, owned and inclusive, aimed at addressing the legitimate concerns of all Yemenis.

 They emphasized the need for a comprehensive political process that includes the full and meaningful participation of women.
