Aden, Newsyemen:

The United Nations warned, on Tuesday, that the Coronavirus may have spread to Yemen, without the authorities being able to detect it, according to a statement by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The statement said: "Yemen remained, so far, unlike the rest of the countries of the eastern Mediterranean region, in the case of one laboratory-confirmed corona infection, which was announced in Hadhramaut Governorate (east) on April 10 this year."

The Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Lise Grande, was quoted as saying, "Since our first infection with Corona, we have warned that the virus is now in Yemen, and it may spread quickly."

"All factors are here, with low levels of general immunity, high levels of acute vulnerability, and a fragile and overburdened health system," she added.

"Based on patterns of virus transmission in other countries, and after 17 days have passed since the first case was announced, agencies warn that there is a very real possibility that the virus has spread without being detected or mitigated within communities," she noted.

"This increases the possibility of an increase in cases that may quickly overwhelm health capabilities," Grande added.

And she added, "There is no time to lose. People must be informed accurately and quickly about what is happening, so that they can do what is necessary to protect themselves and their families."
