Mocha, Newsyemen, private:

Food prices in the city of Mocha have witnessed an unprecedented rise of 15 percent, while some families are experiencing dwindling purchasing power due to poor financial incomes.

The price of flour, the staple food of most families, reached 14,500 riyals, up from 12,000 riyals last month.

The price of sugar increased to 19 thousand riyals for 50kg , while rice prices stabilized, but it disappeared from Mocha markets, in an indication that suppliers tend to raise their prices during the coming days.

The price of cow's milk carton increased from 4,900 and 5,000 riyals to 6000 riyals.

The price of hana beans cardboard also rose to 7,300 up from 6,500 riyals, while the price of yogurt and curd increased to 1,600, and for the curd 3500 riyals from 1350 and 3,200 riyals.

The high prices included soft drinks, juices, cakes and biscuits, as well as consumables and cleaning disinfectants.

Despite the arrival of quantities of flour and other foodstuffs, the abundance of supplies did not contribute to reducing the prices, which jumped by 15%.

And citizens accused the flour dealers of selling it at night at high prices, to smuggle it to African countries while hiding many food items.

The accusations were confirmed by the military police who arrested cars loaded with flour at night, with the intention of smuggling them into the Horn of Africa.

The price increase was preceded by a deep crisis in flour and other foodstuffs, and the plan to create a food crisis to raise prices appears to have been fulfilled.

Many families find it difficult to purchase minimum nutritional requirements, which threatens to exacerbate malnutrition.

And the group, Hayel Saeed Anam, started, at the beginning of last May, to raise the prices of foodstuffs, justifying this by the extraordinary burden due to the difference in the exchange rate.
