On Tuesday, August 18, the UN Security Council will hold a public consultation session to discuss developments in the Yemeni arena in various fields, especially the political, military, economic and humanitarian fields.

UN sources told said that the Security Council will address the political developments in Yemen on two axes during its session: The first deals with the latest results of the consultations of the UN envoy Martin Griffiths with the Yemeni parties regarding the draft comprehensive declaration of ceasefire agreement in preparation for the resumption of the stalled political consultations. Since mid-December 2018 ... while the second axis deals with the steps taken in terms of implementing the mechanism to accelerate the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement reached by the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council under Saudi sponsorship.

Those sources clarified that the discussions of the members of the Security Council will address developments on the military level in light of the escalation of confrontations on more than one front, as well as the continuous violations of the ceasefire agreement in Hodeidah and its negative repercussions on the overall political, economic and humanitarian situation in Yemen, pointing out that the discussions will also deal with the deteriorating economic conditions due to the continued collapse of the Yemeni currency against foreign currencies, as well as the worsening humanitarian conditions due to the repercussions of the war, the spread of the Corona pandemic, the recent rain and flood damage, as well as the repercussions of the decline in international funding from countries and organizations that donate humanitarian programs in Yemen and some delays Countries to fulfill their pledges made during the current year.

It revealed that the Council will devote part of its session to discussing ways to avoid the disaster of oil spillage from the floating Safer reservoir on the coast of Hodeidah in light of the continued intransigence and obstacles put by the Houthi militia to impede the arrival of UN experts to assess the condition of the dilapidated ship and prevent unloading of its oil cargo to avoid the impending disaster that threatens Yemen and the countries bordering on South of the Red Sea.

The sources indicated that the council will listen at the beginning of the session to two briefings: The first covers political and military developments and is presented by the UN envoy to Yemen. The second includes a comprehensive assessment of the humanitarian situation and the economic situation in Yemen presented by the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs - Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, followed by speeches by representatives of the member states of the Council.

The sources did not rule out that at the end of the session a statement issued by the Presidency of the UN Security Council renewing the stance of the international community towards developments in Yemen, and at the forefront of its support for the UN efforts aimed at stopping the military escalation and reducing the humanitarian catastrophe and urging the Yemeni parties to respond to those efforts and resume the political process in order to reach a political settlement.
