Aden, newsyemen:

The fuel crisis and lack of funding for humanitarian programmes threaten to increase the prevalence of MERS-CoV in Yemen, the United Nations said.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a statement on Tuesday evening.

"The fuel crisis and the lack of funding for humanitarian programmes in Yemen threaten to increase the risk of mers-CoV transmission," the statement said.

"UN agencies continue to focus on responding to testing and surveillance, while the purchase of oxygen, personal protective equipment and patient monitoring devices remains a top priority," he said.

"Humanitarian partners intend to send dedicated staff to fight Corona," he said, adding that UN organizations will continue to support public health systems and strengthen the capacity of intensive care units before any second wave of the virus.

As of Monday evening, Yemen had recorded a total of 1,958 cases of MERS-CoV, including 566 deaths and 1,131 recovery.

The toll does not include casualties in areas under Houthi control, which as of May 18 have reported only four cases, including one death, amid official and popular accusations that the true number of victims has been recorded.
