Aden, NewsYemen, Exclusive:

Yemeni activists and social media leaders launched an advocacy campaign on social media, demanding to save the Red Sea from a time bomb that might explode and cause catastrophic damage due to the floating oil tanker “Safer” in the port of Ras Issa, in western Yemen.

The campaign called on the Houthis to "unconditionally" approve the mission of the United Nations experts related to securing the corroded oil tanker SAFER to assess the condition of the ship and make urgent repairs possible.

The campaign came under the hashtag #Saveredsea, and journalist Saddam Al Kamali said, the leak in the Safer ship portends a disaster, and all efforts have not resulted in anything new so far, and the Houthis are procrastinating and lying as usual, everyone should pressure to save Yemen and the sea from this disaster, the consequences of which will be very heavy.

Twitter user Osama Mahmoud commented, “The Safer ship is about to collapse, a terrifying and dangerous disaster, which must turn into a public opinion issue, and he called on the Houthis to allow the United Nations to carry out urgent maintenance.”

Activist Ghadir Tira tweeted, "Save the Red Sea" is a new campaign led by a group of Yemeni youth, with which we aim to lobby and advocate to allow the United Nations to secure a tanker and save the Red Sea from an oil spill occurring in the meantime.

The tweeters explained in a petition that the explosion may lead to the closure of the port of Hodeidah for a period of up to 6 months, and this port receives about 70% of Yemen's imports, including the most important needs of food and humanitarian supplies, which may represent a humanitarian disaster in Yemen.

The campaign called on all Yemenis to put pressure on the conflicting parties, and to demand the protection of the Red Sea and the speedy start of implementing treatments for the Safer oil tanker.

The campaign's tweets spread in both Arabic and English, as Maha Al-Salhi, a member of Nice Ship and Director of UT, said Yemeni youth are calling for maintenance and urgent repairs to the tanker.

The Yemeni youth said in a statement: We realize that the oil tanker SAFER is a "floating time bomb", and accordingly we urgently demand that the necessary measures be taken to avoid the explosion of this bomb, we specifically advocate the following:

1) We call on the Houthis (Ansar Allah) to "unconditionally" agree to the UN experts' mission related to securing the corroded SAFER oil tanker, to assess the condition of the ship and carry out possible urgent repairs. This approval by the Houthis is considered an urgent necessity, and their constant refusal to grant permission will lead to severe environmental, humanitarian and economic damage.

2) We call on the international community, member states of the Security Council, regional and local authorities and environmental organizations around the world to play their role in protecting and securing the tanker and averting this tragedy.

Finally, we call on all citizens in and outside Yemen to participate in the demand to save the Red Sea via the following link

It seems that the countdown to the explosion or sinking of the tanker carrying one and a half million barrels of crude oil is approaching at a terrifying speed, especially after the assurances of officials in the Safer Company that maintenance work is no longer a possible solution to save the environment from an imminent disaster, due to the start of water leakage into the perimeter of the floating reservoir in Ras Issa port, and that the rest of the solution is summarized in an urgent inventory dump.
