Exacerbating the crisis of the election disputes for the Presidency of the Parliament of Sana'a

The Houthi militia announced the selection of the leader of the Congress Party, Yahya Ali al-Ra’i, as the speaker of the House of Representatives in Sana'a, which has been under its control since its coup against constitutional legitimacy in September 2014.

Political sources in Sana'a revealed to (NewsYemen) sharp differences between the Houthi militia and the Congress Party in Sana'a over the election of the Presidency of the Council of Representatives.

And five days after the election of a president and a Presidency of the Council of Representatives in Sana'a, and the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - closed the parliament’s gate and disrupted its work, the Houthi militia announced late on the night of Wednesday, November 11, the selection of al-Ra'i as the speaker, ignoring the results of the election of members of the Presidency.

Contrary to what was announced by the newspaper (Al-Mithaq), the mouthpiece of the General People's Congress Party in Sanaa, which indicated that Al-Raei won the position of Speaker of Parliament with a majority, the Houthi militia said, "The House of Representatives chose Sheikh Yahya Al-Rahi as the head of the council by consensus between Ansar Allah and the General People's Congress."

Last Saturday, November 7, the elections resulted in the renewal of confidence for the conference leader, Yahya Al-Ra'i, for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, while the membership of the Presidency of the Council, "deputies" for the Speaker of the Council, won by voting by: Abdo Muhammad Bishr, Abd al-Salam Hashal and Akram Atiyah.

Political sources considered the Houthi militia’s announcement officially on Wednesday night, November 11, to elect al-Ra’i by consensus between the Houthi militia and the conference, the beginning of a series of pressures and harassment against the conference leader, Yahya al-Rahi.

Noting the continuing exacerbation of the crisis, with the reservation of the Houthi militia on the results of the election of the members of the Presidency: Abdo Muhammad Bishr, Abd al-Salam Hashal, Akram Atiyah, as deputy heads of the council.

Al-Mithaq newspaper announced in its Monday 9 November issue that the House of Representatives in Sana'a would conduct an election on Saturday, November 7, according to its list to renew the council’s presidency, noting that "the process took place in a competitive electoral environment."

 According to the newspaper, the elections for the Speaker of the Council resulted in the victory of Sheikh Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i, with a full majority in front of his rival, Representative Ahmed Saif Hashid, who also questioned the legality of the elections.
