Citizens in Al-Jawf Governorate complained of extortion and the deliberate intentional removal of the Houthi militia, the Iranian arm in Yemen, to cut off the electricity supply and raise the tariff to a commercial level.

According to local sources, the Houthi militia, since its control of the governorate's capital, has begun to interfere in the work of the Electricity Corporation branch and reduce operating hours to less than 12 hours with frequent shutdowns that often reach consecutive days.

The militia also raised the tariff on the kilowatt from 9 riyals to 170 riyals, and imposed incapacitating fees on the electrical sectors, which caused material and financial damage to farmers, merchants, shop owners and professions estimated at billions of riyals, and deprived more than 300 thousand citizens.

In the context, the Committee for Rights and Information in Al-Jawf governorate condemned the extortion and damage to their farms by the Houthi militia that citizens are exposed to.

The committee said in a statement that electricity is a basic and necessary service for life and a necessary condition for exercising the right to health and the right to a decent life, according to the Yemeni constitution and international norms. Failure to provide it is a violation of a human right, cutting it off, and blackmailing people with it is a serious crime punishable by law

The committee called on human rights organizations to condemn these acts and put pressure on this terrorist group to neutralize basic services and not to exploit them or to interfere with the work of the Electricity Corporation branch or the parties associated with it.
