Aden, NewsYemen:

Reuters reported, quoting diplomatic sources, that a new UN envoy to Yemen will be chosen to succeed Britain's Martin Griffiths, whose term expires in the next few days.

The agency stated that the two most prominent to fill the position are the European Union ambassador to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and Nicholas Kay, a former British diplomat and former United Nations envoy to Somalia.

According to the agency, the Security Council must approve the choice of the nomination of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.

The outgoing UN envoy had presented his last briefing to the Security Council, in which he informed him that "the two parties to the conflict have not yet overcome their differences" despite his three-year attempt to mediate an end to the war, expressing his hopes that "the efforts made by the Sultanate of Oman and others will bear fruit, after  My visits to Sana'a and Riyadh.

Speaking to reporters after the briefing, Griffiths said that he will leave his UN position as a special envoy to Yemen later in July.

On May 12, the United Nations Secretary-General announced the appointment of the British diplomat as Head of Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, indicating that he would continue his duties as a mediator in Yemen until the alternative was announced.

The United Nations appointed Griffiths as envoy to Yemen, to succeed Mauritanian Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, on February 13, 2018.
