Marib, NewsYemen:

The Executive Unit for the Management of IDP Camps in Marib Governorate confirmed that about 130,000 boys and girls living in displacement camps will not be able to continue their education this year due to the lack of school supplies for the new school year.

Saif Muthanna, Director of the Executive Unit for Camps in Marib, indicated that there are schools inside the camps, but they are crowded with children, with the increase in the number of displaced people who have arrived in the camps, due to the continuing battles on the outskirts of the governorate, where Marib alone hosts 61 percent of the internally displaced Yemenis, and has the largest displacement camp, which is in the governorate, al-Jafina camp contains 10,000 families, with a population of more than 75,000 individuals, most of whom are women and children.

Ali Al-Abab, Deputy Minister of Education, explained that the governorate's schools are full and unable to accommodate the large number of students, and therefore large numbers of students in displacement camps will not be able to enroll in schools.

Najeeb Abdel-Rahman Al-Saadi, director of the executive unit for managing the camps for the displaced, told Asharq Al-Awsat that displaced children, many of them are denied access to schools.

Either because the capacity of government schools does not enable them to accommodate those large numbers, or because the schools are far from some of the camps, or because of the lack of study tools such as chairs and books.

He added that many families cannot bear the costs of studying, and there is another problem related to the lack of documents for a number of students because they fled their areas without being able to obtain documents, as the documents are always with school administrations.

It is noteworthy that the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned in July that the number of children at risk of being deprived of education in Yemen could rise to 6 million.
