Aden, NewsYemen, special:

The Food and Agriculture Organization said that the agricultural sector in Yemen currently provides only 15 to 20 percent of food.

The organization attributed the decline in the contribution of the agricultural sector in Yemen to food security supplies, to the conflict and diseases that had devastating effects and limited livelihoods.

The organization indicated that despite the decline in the agricultural sector's contribution to food security, it is still the most important economic sector in Yemen.

“This is why this multi-year funding from the Bank is so important,” said the FAO Country Representative.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has allocated $61 million for its activities in Yemen to strengthen food sources, by increasing the production of crops, livestock and fish products;  strengthening local farming systems;  and the establishment of agricultural chains at the national level.

“For millions of Yemeni families, food production in their backyard represents a firewall between them and the most severe manifestations of hunger,” said FAO Country Representative, Hussain Jadin.

“We must boost domestic food production right now to prevent the spread of severe acute food insecurity,” he said, highlighting the need to build agriculture for food and jobs in the long term.

Yemen remains a rural country, with 68 percent of the population leading a self-sufficient agricultural life in small mountain villages.

In 2010, the agricultural sector contributed about 8.3 percent to GDP.  However, most of this is due to khat production.
