Aden, NewsYemen:

The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, called on Monday for an end to violence against women in the country, which has been mired in war for nearly seven years.

In a brief statement on Twitter, Grundberg said reducing all forms of violence against women and girls is critical to building an inclusive future in Yemen of peace, hope and dignity for all.

He added, the conflict and its drivers exacerbate the already dire situation of Yemeni women and girls, and deteriorate their rights and security.

Grundberg's call came on the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence.

Earlier, the National Committee to investigate allegations of human rights violations in Yemen announced the killing and wounding of 1,620 women since the start of the war.

In a statement, the committee stated that "thousands of women's exposure to various forms of violations and gender-based violence has intensified, with the intensification of the ongoing war in Yemen."
