Aden, NewsYemen:

Ships of the US Fifth Fleet seized about 1,400 AK-47 assault rifles and 226,600 rounds of ammunition from an "unidentified" fishing boat, while boarding the boat to check the identity of the flag in accordance with customary international law, (Northern Arabian Sea) on December 20.

The weapons were found by US Navy coastal patrol vessels during a search by US Coast Guard personnel, according to a US Navy statement.  The illegal weapons and ammunition were subsequently transferred for examination.

The statement said that the initial assessment indicates that the boat originated in Iran and crossed international waters along a route historically used to smuggle weapons illegally to the Houthis in Yemen.

The statement indicated that the direct or indirect supply, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis violates United Nations Security Council resolutions and US sanctions.

According to the statement, the five-member crew of the boat identified themselves as Yemeni.

On the fifth of this month, US officials said that a US Navy warship had seized a "large shipment of weapons" on a boat containing Iranian missile parts that were on their way to the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
