Aden, NewsYemen, exclusive:

Since the beginning of the Yemeni crisis, the United Arab Emirates has sought to extend a helping hand by adopting an emergency response plan that included providing a package of relief, service and humanitarian aid, to alleviate the wounds of Yemenis who suffered from the oppression of the Houthis and terrorist organizations.

Over the past eight years, the generous giving provided by the UAE has emerged in many aspects of life, and Yemeni citizens have touched them in the north, south, east and west, in order to help the needy and relieve their suffering.

The UAE stood by Yemen after the Houthis placed it in the most difficult services, living and humanitarian conditions, and the UAE hastened to alleviate the suffering of their brothers through direct and indirect development and relief aid.

A financial deposit to revive the economy

During the year 2022, the fraternal giving of the brothers continued to normalize the situation and support the efforts of the Yemeni government and the Presidential Leadership Council. Perhaps the most prominent of these aids is the UAE’s joint financial deposit with Saudi Arabia, amounting to 3 billion dollars, of which the UAE provided 1,102,500,000 dirhams.

The financial deposit came with the aim of reviving the deteriorating economic situation, improving the collapsed local currency, the "Yemeni riyal", in addition to providing an appropriate environment for economic advancement and recovery, which is directly reflected in the lives of citizens and contributes to lowering prices.

Strategic power station

The Emirati economic and humanitarian support to Yemen did not stop at this limit, which culminated in the financial deposit in 2022, but included basic service sectors, foremost of which was the electricity sector, which was affected by the hands of Houthi sabotage and destruction.

The UAE signed a joint cooperation agreement with the Yemeni Ministry of Electricity to provide the capital, Aden, with a solar power plant with a total capacity of 120 MW.  The project is considered the first and largest strategic project to generate electricity through clean and renewable energy in our country, as it will reduce the cost of generating electricity during daylight hours, as well as the fuel requirement for power plants, and will also contribute to preserving the environment by reducing carbon emissions.

Agriculture revitalization

The Hassan Dam project in Abyan Governorate is one of the most important strategic projects inside Yemen, the construction of which costs more than $100 million and is funded by the UAE.

The dam is of great importance to the development of the agricultural sector in Yemen, as the project aims to increase agricultural production and increase Yemeni agricultural exports abroad.

In the Socotra archipelago, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works is keen to support the agricultural sector in the archipelago and its small islands, by providing it with tens of thousands of seedlings, to encourage the people of Socotra to cultivate in order to provide healthy food for their families and achieve food security.

Strengthening the water sector

The water and sanitation sector in several Yemeni governorates also received great attention within the package of development and service projects adopted by the UAE through its humanitarian arms.

The UAE has supported and financed 10 development projects for the water and sanitation sector in the capital, Aden, aimed at developing and improving sources of water production in fields, modernizing distribution networks, and rehabilitating sewage networks and treatment plants.

The projects included the rehabilitation of the Al-Haswa sewage treatment plant, the construction of a water conveyor line from the re-pumping station in the isthmus in Khor Maksar to the distribution tank in Bab Aden, the construction of a 2,000-meter-long conveyor supply line for the Sirah district, and the supply of electrical transformers for power systems in the fields, and drainage pumps.  Sanitary, with 28 pumps, and 30 submersible pumps for wells with complete accessories.  As well as the supply of a 6-meter-deep excavator, two small Bobcat diggers, mobile suction pumps for rainwater, in addition to the supply of spare parts for permanent use.

The UAE has also contributed to the drilling of 15 wells during the current year 2022 in Hadramout Governorate, benefiting more than 50,000 people, in coordination and cooperation with the General Corporation for Water and Sanitation in Hadramout Coast, with the aim of addressing and solving the problem of water scarcity in the various directorates of the governorate.

This package of projects comes during the year 2022, within the first phase of the UAE’s intervention, to support the infrastructure in the capital, Aden, and the liberated governorates, according to the priorities set by the Water and Sanitation Corporation, which is restricted to a limited and short time program that is binding on the implementing companies, to ensure the speedy recovery of this sector, and the development of its capabilities and capabilities to meet the great need and population expansion

Continuing relief for families in need

During the current year 2022, the Emirati humanitarian arms, the Red Crescent Authority and Khalifa Humanitarian Foundation, worked to deliver relief aid to needy and poor families in liberated Yemeni regions.

This aid comes as a continuation of the aid bridges launched by the UAE to achieve food security through integrated food baskets that contain basic materials.  This aid targeted thousands of poor families with limited incomes in several Yemeni regions.

The Red Crescent Authority hastened to deliver food aid to the Al-Saeed Directorate in Shabwa Governorate, as part of its extensive humanitarian efforts to help citizens and improve their living conditions, after getting rid of the Brotherhood militia's control of the governorate.  Last October, the humanitarian arm of the UAE, the Emirates Red Crescent, provided 85 tons and 600 kg of foodstuffs to the citizens of Al-Musaina, to contribute to helping them cope with the difficult living conditions.

In November, the Emirates Red Crescent distributed more than 85 tons of various foodstuffs and consumer goods to more than 11,000 people from the remote Arama district in Shabwa governorate.

The United Arab Emirates, represented by its humanitarian arm, the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, has also provided food aid as an urgent aid to the residents and families of the poorest families and those with limited income in the Dahr district of Shabwa governorate.

The food aid provided by the Emirates Red Crescent Authority during 2022 in Shabwa alone amounted to more than 50,000 food baskets, and more than 252,000 Yemeni citizens are scheduled to benefit from it.

Establishment of Mocha airport to break the siege of Taiz

And as part of the efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of the people of the besieged areas in Taiz and the western coast, the UAE adopted, during the year 2022, two strategic projects represented in the establishment of an international airport in the city of Al-Mokha, as well as the construction of the "Mocha Al-Kadha" road.

The aim of the two projects, which are among the most important projects in the western coast, is to break the siege imposed on Taiz Governorate by the Houthi coup militia, as well as decisive humanitarian interventions carried out by the Humanitarian Cell of the National Resistance, the partner of the Emirates Red Crescent on the ground.

Continuous support for the people of Socotra

Emirati support reached places that were suffering from a lot of deprivation in terms of services and development, and the Emirati charitable arms and institutions worked to revive them and end the state of isolation they were living in due to the war.

One of these places, revived by the Emirati humanitarian support, was the province of the Socotra archipelago, in which Emirati goodness was found in a remarkable and strong manner, through dozens of humanitarian, health and educational projects, and in the field of infrastructure.

The Khalifa Foundation for Humanitarian Works established hospitals and health centers in the regions of the island, foremost of which is the Khalifa Charitable Hospital in Hadiboh, in addition to carrying out air and sea relief trips, and sending outstanding Socotri students to study in the Emirates and other countries.
