UAE in the Security Council: We support Saudi mediation efforts in Yemen

 The UAE affirmed its full support for the continuous mediation efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to end the war in Yemen, in preparation for the start of a comprehensive political process between the Yemeni parties.

In a session of the Security Council on the situation in Yemen, Ambassador Mohammed Bushhab, deputy representative of the UAE to the United Nations, stressed the importance of concerted efforts to seize the current opportunity to end the crisis and start a new phase that ends the suffering of the Yemeni people and restores security, stability and prosperity for them.

He added that the process of releasing hundreds of prisoners and abductees in recent days represents a new glimmer of hope that enhances optimism about the possibility of achieving further progress on various humanitarian, economic and political tracks, and called for a greater focus on reviving the Yemeni economy, given its close connection with alleviating the humanitarian crisis and improving the living conditions of Yemenis.

Bushahab added, in a statement published on the website of the UAE Mission to the United Nations on its website: “We also appreciate the sincere efforts made by the Sultanate of Oman to achieve reconciliation in Yemen, and we stress the importance of concerted efforts to seize the current opportunity to end the crisis and the start of a new phase that ends the suffering of the Yemeni people and restores security, stability and prosperity for them.

The statement of the UAE delegation to the Security Council on the situation in Yemen, delivered by Ambassador Muhammad Bushhab, affirmed that the process of releasing hundreds of prisoners and abductees in recent days represents a new glimmer of hope that enhances optimism about the possibility of achieving further progress on various humanitarian, economic and political tracks.  We hope that this step will enhance opportunities for the release of all prisoners and abductees based on the principle (all for all) stipulated in the Stockholm Agreement.

In this context, we commend the efforts made by the Office of the Special Envoy and the International Committee of the Red Cross to achieve this important humanitarian achievement.  We also welcome the generous humanitarian gesture from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in which 104 Houthi prisoners were unilaterally released, as another step to support the peace process.

 Bushahab explained that in light of the positive transformation taking place in Yemen and the region in general, we stress the importance of reaching a road map that paves the way for launching a Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations.  To achieve this purpose, we must focus on placing the interests of the Yemeni people and their future above any other considerations, abandoning the use or threat of weapons, and adhering to dialogue as the only means to resolve differences until a peaceful solution is reached based on the outcomes of the national dialogue, the Gulf initiative and the relevant Security Council resolutions.

 The Deputy Representative of the UAE to the United Nations added: With the passage of one year since the relative calm in Yemen, the UAE reaffirms its full support for regional and international efforts aimed at finding a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

 The UAE also affirms its continued support for the brotherly Yemeni people and its keenness to achieve stability and development in Yemen.  It also called on the UAE to focus more on reviving the Yemeni economy. Bushahab said: In the humanitarian and economic contexts, we call for a greater focus on reviving the Yemeni economy, because it is closely related to alleviating the humanitarian crisis and improving the living conditions of Yemenis.

The Emirati statement called on the Houthis to lift all restrictions imposed on organizations working in the humanitarian field, especially those targeting women.  We stress the importance of supporting efforts aimed at empowering Yemeni women and supporting their participation in the political, economic and social fields.

The Emirati deputy delegate stressed the need to show wisdom and rationality in the next stage and adhere to the approach of calm, dialogue and peace, while directing efforts towards the process of construction, development and prosperity in Yemen and the entire region.
