The Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, discussed with Qatar's Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwa Al Khater, and other Qatari officials the importance of strengthening regional and international support for UN mediation efforts in Yemen.
A statement issued by the Office of the UN Envoy stated that the discussion addressed the progress made to support the parties to agree on measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and to commit to implementing a ceasefire throughout the country, and resuming an inclusive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
“The solution to the conflict must be negotiated by the Yemenis,” Grundberg said. “Increasing regional cohesion undoubtedly gives greater hope for reaching a solution to the situation in Yemen,” stressing the region’s major role in accompanying Yemen on the path to peace, as well as reconstruction and recovery.
According to the statement, Grundberg participated in the launch event of the Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR), where he dialogued with a group of experts about possible approaches to collective action to address the challenges of peacebuilding and reconstruction in Yemen. The discussions also focused on the link between Yemen's peace and stability and the region's security and international trade paths.
