The European Union warned on Sunday of a "real threat to regional security" in the Middle East after attacks on two oil facilities in Saudi Arabia on Saturday and threatened to disrupt global energy supplies.

"Yesterday's drone attack on Saudi Aramco's oil facilities in Saudi Arabia poses a real threat to regional security," said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in a statement.

"At a time of escalating tension in the region, this attack undermines the continuing work to stop the escalation and dialogue," she said, calling for "maximum restraint and stop escalation."

Iranian Houthi militias claimed responsibility for the drone attack on two Saudi Aramco oil plants, one of the world's largest oil refineries.

Mogherini's comments came hours after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed in a tweet on his Twitter account that Iran was behind the attack on two Saudi Aramco oil refineries.

The foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned in the strongest terms and unanimously the targeting of two Saudi Aramco plants in Abqaiq and Khurais province in the "Eastern Kingdom".

This came after their emergency meeting, Sunday, in Jeddah, which was devoted to discuss "the announcement of the Israeli Prime Minister of the Israeli occupation intention to annex land from the occupied West Bank."

OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen said in a statement today that the ministers expressed their condemnation of the terrorist incident and noted the official statements issued by member states, non-members and regional and international organizations that condemned and condemned these attacks that destabilize the Kingdom.  And the region, targeting the global energy supply and the global economy. "

Al-Othaimeen explained that the ministers expressed their countries' solidarity with Saudi Arabia in all measures taken to confront terrorism and maintain its security and stability, praising its pivotal role in combating terrorism.

He pointed out that the ministers demanded a serious stand against this sinful attack and those behind it and supports the perpetrators, considering that the prejudice to the security of the Kingdom is prejudice to the security and cohesion of the Islamic world.

The Ministers instructed the OIC Secretary General to inform the United Nations and regional organizations of this action and to prepare a report thereon for the next Ministerial Meeting.
