High milk and yogurt prices and low meat prices

The prices of animal products in the Yemeni markets witnessed during last September drop in the price of goat and beef meat, because of the reluctance of citizens to buy them, while high prices of yogurt and milk.

At the national level, retail prices remained stable in September compared to August, and an exceptional increase in prices of 5% for yogurt and 2% for local beef milk, according to the monthly price monitoring bulletin.

According to the bulletin, which monitors markets in 18 Yemeni governorates, the decline in prices ranged between 8% and 9%, while the retail price of live chickens and eggs was negatively affected by the increase in supply in most governorates.  The highest decline in egg prices was recorded in Hodeidah by 24%, the Capital Municipality 21% and Hajja by 10%.

The bulletin issued by the Food Security Information Systems and Early Warning Project, carried out by FAO in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning, expected that the price of yogurt and milk will increase during the coming period, with the beginning of winter and the school return season causing an increase in demand along with a decrease in production.

The average price of animal products during the month of September 2019, egg dish 1590 riyals, chicken 1 kg 1860  riyals, and beef milk 627 riyals per liter, and the kilogram of sheep meat 5730 riyals, and 5 thousand riyals per kilogram of beef.

The prices of live animals, sheep and goats in all Yemeni markets, fell in September compared to the previous month in August 2019, due to lack of demand and need by consumers during the same period, except for Aden and Sanaa.
