In his briefing to the UN Security Council on Friday, Martin Griffiths, the special envoy to Yemen, expressed concern "about the increasing restrictions on the movement of UNAMID staff in Hodeidah," without naming the Houthi militias controlling the city and the three ports.

This is the first time Griffith has spoken openly of militias tightening restrictions on the mission of General Abhijit Guha, international observers and UNMIS staff in Hodeidah, despite frequent incidents and denials of movement, particularly during the installation of the five observation posts in Hodeidah.

"These restrictions not only impede the day-to-day operations of the Mission, but also threaten the implementation of the Mission's tasks," the UN envoy said.

"I hope that the authorities concerned will take all necessary measures to ensure the freedom of movement necessary for the implementation of the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Support of the Hodeida Agreement.
