Indonesia announced on Tuesday that it had modified the weather by dispersing the clouds before it reached the capital Jakarta and caused more floods.

"We have started the cloud seeding process by launching salt bombs on clouds over the Java Sea and the Sunda Strait until rain falls over the waters off Java Island," Hammam Rida, head of the Technology Implementation and Assessment Agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

He continued: «We have been able to do the rainy operation in some areas, which will lead to weakening the rains in the greater Jakarta region in terms of its duration and intensity».

He added that on Monday, two planes deployed 26,600 kilograms of salt to do the cloud seeding, stressing that the process would continue if the need arises.

Rida explained that clouds are still forming, and rain is expected in Greater Jakarta, but the expected severity will be much weaker than to cause a flood.

Heavy rains hit the Indonesian cities this week, causing floods in Jakarta and its cities, which are home to about 30 million people.

The National Disaster Agency reported that the floods and landslides that ravaged Jakarta and its cities at the start of the new year had killed 67 people, as well as the displacement of more than 36,000 people.
