The recent collapse of the national currency has caused a significant increase in the prices of basic foodstuffs and consumer goods in all governorates of Yemen

Prices recorded an increase in the Yemeni markets, by 20% for various items, compared to prices of last year 2019, due to the frequent collapse of the country's national currency at the present time.

In the city of Mukalla, wholesale dealers say, in a conversation with "NewsYemen", the price increase affected all items without exception, and they were forced to raise prices with the collapse of the national currency.

The merchants denied that there is no increase in prices, but the collapse of the country's national currency is the reason for the increase, as the import process from abroad is in other currencies, which pushes them to raise the prices of most items to match the prices of buying hard currencies at the local market price.

In addition to the high prices, Yemen has witnessed the disappearance of flour from the warehouses of some merchants in Hadhramaut, while some Yemeni governorates suffer from a suffocating crisis in bakery flour, which caused the closure of many bakeries and ovens in those areas.

Commenting on the disappearance of the flour, one of the merchants in Hadhramaut Governorate said that there is no need to worry about that, explaining that the traders are avoiding supplying their warehouses - currently - to avoid depression and expiration only, after many citizens have obtained the wheat flour from some relief organizations.

In terms of cement materials, with the exception of iron, whose market is linked to the global metal market, several varieties have witnessed the same increase in varying proportions, with some of them temporarily lacking in some merchants because of the lack of purchasing power of citizens after the new price, which will impose itself on the ground.
