Interim President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi issued, on Friday evening, a presidential decree appointing an officer accused of stealing hundreds of millions from the salaries of employees of the Ministry of Interior in Al-Bayda governorate, as the attorney general of the republic.

The Yemeni News Agency, Saba, in its version of the Sharia spokesperson, reported that a presidential decree had been issued to dismiss the Attorney General, Dr. Ali Al-Awash, and to appoint Major General Ahmed Al-Masawi, who was serving as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

According to an official document issued by the Director General of Al-Bayda Security, Ahmed Ali Al-Hamiqani, Al-Masawi is accused of stealing 189 million riyals from the salaries of employees of the security services in the governorate during his tenure as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

The decision to appoint Al-Masawi to the position of the Attorney General was widely rejected by the Yemenis, who considered it a grave breach of law and militarization of the judiciary, as the "Masawi" is a member of the Interior Ministry, while the law stipulates that the person appointed to the position should be a member of the judiciary.
