Aden, NewsYemen:

The World Bank on Tuesday approved a $50 million grant to support the Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project in Yemen.

The World Bank said this additional financing is directed at re-facilitating access to essential urban services and strengthening the resilience of specific cities in Yemen to external shocks.

He stated that the United Nations Office for Project Services will undertake the implementation of this project, in partnership with local Yemeni institutions.

He pointed out that the cities of Yemen were severely damaged after six years of conflict, with extensive damage to the infrastructure.

Director of the Yemen office at the World Bank, Tanya Meyer, said that this project is more important today than ever before;  In addition to the devastating effects of conflict and the complications added by the COVID-19 pandemic, Yemen is vulnerable to floods and other climate-related shocks.

"Through an integrated approach aimed at building resilience in urban areas, the Second Emergency Integrated Urban Services Project in Yemen will support basic services, key hubs and off-grid electrification of health and education facilities," she added.

In January 2020, the damages in the 16 cities covered by the World Bank’s Dynamic Needs Assessment for Yemen were estimated at between $6.9 billion and $8.5 billion, with Sana’a ranked first among these most devastated cities, followed by Taiz. In addition both of Aden and Hodeidah were severely affect.
