Aden, NewsYemen:

Reporters Without Borders ranked Yemen as the third most dangerous country in the world for journalists during the year 2021.

In its annual report on freedom of journalists in the world, the organization said that the number of journalists and media workers killed in 2021 reached its lowest level in twenty years, with 46 deaths.

added, this year, Mexico and Afghanistan are still the most dangerous countries for journalists, with 7 and 6 journalists killed, followed by Yemen and India in third place, with four journalists killed in each.

Press freedoms in Yemen are witnessing their worst stage, given the horrific violations committed by the Houthi militia against journalists and media professionals in this country that has been at war for more than six years - according to human rights reports.

Reports confirmed that Yemeni media freedoms were subjected to 1,359 violations from 2015 until the third quarter of 2021 , including 38 killings. The Journalists Syndicate monitored 841 violations, or 63.2% of the number of violations in the country. The Houthi militia loyal to Iran topped the list of perpetrators.

In its annual report, the organization counted the killing of 46 journalists in 2021, the lowest death toll in twenty years, while at the same time it announced that there are 488 media workers currently imprisoned in the world, in a record number.

"The number of imprisoned journalists has never been so high since the creation of Reporters Without Borders' annual report in 1995," the press rights organization said.

The organization stated that it had never recorded a "number of female journalists imprisoned" as high as 60, or a third more than in 2020.

While men represent most of the number of imprisoned journalists in the world (87.7%), Belarus is the country that imprisoned more female journalists (17) than male journalists (15).

The five countries with the highest number of journalists imprisoned until December 1 are China (127), Burma (53), Vietnam (43), Belarus (32) and Saudi Arabia (31).
