Aden, NewsYemen:

The United Nations bodies said, in a joint statement, that the Houthi militia had detained two employees of UNESCO and the human rights organization since early last November, and called for their immediate release.

The United Nations expressed its concern about the continued arbitrary detention of two of its employees with the Houthi militia in Sana'a.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said: “Although the staff members remain in detention, the UN has not received any information about the charges against them or the legal justification for their detention, or even information on their current status , despite previous assurances by those authorities of their immediate release.

The United States said in November that the Houthis had detained several Yemeni employees in the US embassy compound in Sana'a, without disclosing their number.

The embassy has been closed since 2015 after the Houthis expelled the internationally recognized government from Sanaa in late 2014. The mission has since been operating in Saudi Arabia.
