Freedoms Observatory documents 86 Houthi violations against media professionals

The Media Freedoms Observatory in Yemen documented 86 violations against media freedoms in Yemen during the year 2021, which varied between a number of violations, including: killing, injury, kidnapping, assault, and targeting media institutions.

The observatory said in a statement, that the most prominent violations of the terrorist Houthi militia were the killing of 4 journalists in a hideous way in less than a month: Ahmed Bu Saleh, Tariq Mustafa, Ahmed Baras and Rasha Al-Harazi.

Violations varied between 6 cases of injury, 18 cases of arrest, 9 cases of assault, 13 cases of threats, 5 cases of trial and interrogation by prosecutors and police stations, 12 cases of displacement, 5 cases of storming, looting and stopping media institutions, and 4 cases of violations distributed between breaking into homes, looting and incitement and unfair dismissal.

The statement described the year 2021 as the worst year, when terrifying methods were used against journalists, by planting explosives under journalists' cars, and this is what happened to journalist Mahmoud al-Atmi and his pregnant wife, journalist Rasha al-Harazi.

He pointed out that the Houthi militia topped the list of perpetrators of violations against journalists in Yemen with 40 violations of the total cases recorded during the past year, and 21 violations committed by parties affiliated with the Yemeni government, and 24 violations were recorded on a number of factions, including 9 violations against unknown persons.

The report described media work in Yemen as walking in a minefield, given the many challenges they face and the difficulty of continuing in an unfriendly environment for media work, as the number of journalists killed during the past seven years reached 50 journalists and media workers from 2015 until the end of  year 2021

During the past year, the report monitored 17 violations in the city of Taiz, 16 violations in the city of Sana'a, 15 violations in the city of Aden, 20 violations in Marib governorate, 9 violations in the city of Hadramout, 4 violations in the city of Ibb, 3 violations in the city of Lahj, one violation in Shabwa governorate, and another in the city of Amran.
