Aden, NewsYemen:

The head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, settled the controversy over the objectives of the Nation Shield Forces (Dir’ al-Watan) which he issued a republican decree at the end of last January regarding their formation.

Al-Alimi said, in the context of a press interview with the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, “The Nation Shield forces Dir’ al-Watan) were basically formed before even issuing the decision to transfer power to the Presidential Leadership Council in April 2022.

There were the Happy Yemen Brigades, and these brigades contributed to the defense of Marib when it was under a state of severe siege, as some of the Brigades of Al-Saeed Yemen contributed to the cohesion and steadfastness of Marib.

He added, "We were thinking in the leadership council, within the framework of our next military plan, about the need for a reserve force with the state, because there are thousands of martyrs on various fronts, in Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea, Lahj, Al-Hodeidah, Saada, Marib, Taiz, Shabwa, and others, and many wounded as well. Therefore, it was necessary to the presence of new blood, and Nation Shield Forces (Dir’ al-Watan) represents this new blood.”

He stressed that the Nation Shield is a reserve force that does not perform any tasks in place of any other forces, whether the Republican Guard or the Presidential Guard. Rather, it is a reserve force to carry out any tasks directed by the Presidential Command Council.

A wide controversy arose during the past weeks about the goals of forming this force in conjunction with the southern movements to liberate the districts of Wadi and the desert of Hadramout from the control of the Brotherhood under the name of the "First Military Region".
