Aden, NewsYemen, exclusive:

Strong winds and rains that hit the capital, Aden, at dawn on Monday, caused great damage to public and private property, amid reports of injuries among citizens.

The bad weather conditions led to a total outage of electricity and communications services in a number of Aden districts, including the districts of Al-Mualla and Khormaksar, after electricity and lighting poles, telephone lines and billboards fell.  The storm also ripped off the roofs of wooden houses and hangars, and left many citizens injured, not to mention damage to their private property.

The strong winds caused severe damage to Aden International Airport, which prompted the airport administration to postpone a number of flights on schedule until the weather conditions improved.  The fall of the glass facade of the airport building left a number of injuries among the passengers who were inside the waiting hall.

According to engineers and technicians at the airport, the strong winds caused the fall of some ceilings of the halls inside the airport, as well as the windows of the facades, in addition to the damage to the fire trucks and the destruction of part of the airport wall, noting that two planes belonging to Yemenia Airlines were damaged by the storm and need maintenance and technical repairs necessary in order to restart them.

According to a number of passengers, the flights (Aden-Jeddah) and (Aden-Cairo) were delayed, and they were detained for hours due to strong winds inside the waiting halls, amid the fall of the glass facade and iron ceilings, injuring a number of those present.

In turn, the Minister of Transport, Dr. Abdulsalam Saleh Humaid, directed the Acting Director General of the Airport, Abdul Raqeeb Al-Omari, to limit the damage caused by the strong winds, as well as to ensure the treatment of citizens who were injured as a result of the fall of the glass facade.

This came during a field visit conducted by the minister to Aden International Airport, to see the extent of damage to the airport as a result of the thunderstorm, winds and rains.

The minister followed the procedures and arrangements for the resumption of scheduled flights, which are the (Aden Jeddah) flight, the (Aden Cairo) flight, and the (Al-Rayyan-Socotra) flight, and the completion of transactions in the airport halls at the specified time for the flight without delay, stressing the need to remove the waste, arrange the airport and re-readiness.

Minister Hamid affirmed that the air traffic at the airport continues and operates normally, reassuring travelers that the flight schedule is proceeding according to its schedule, directing the leadership of Yemenia Airlines to expedite the readiness of the two planes to operate within the fleet according to the company's regular flight schedules.

Sources at Aden International Airport confirmed that the Yemenia flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, took off normally, while arrangements are being made to operate the rest of the flights based on the schedule of Aden International Airport flights scheduled for Monday.

For its part, the Media Department of Aden Electricity stated that the technical maintenance teams have been working since the early morning to deal with the damage of the thunderstorm, which resulted in the fall of a number of high-pressure cable columns, explaining that the electricity is being restored to the affected neighborhoods in the districts of Al-Mualla and Khormaksar, respectively, after the end of the maintenance work.

The electricity media confirmed that all the generating stations are operating efficiently and did not record any significant malfunctions, except that some operating switches were turned off during the storm, in anticipation of any damage that might be caused to them.
