Source: Prisoners are subjected to torture, financial exploitation in Shabwa criminal prison

A security source at the Criminal Investigation Department in Shabwa province, southeastern Yemen, reported that prisoners were tortured and extorted in a criminal investigation prison in Ataq city, the Capital of Shabwa.

Recently, released prisoners told NewsYemen that officers and soldiers loyal to Hadi's government are committing abuses against inmates at the criminal investigation prison, beating them severely, and forcing them to pay up to Y.R 40,000 at the end of their cases so as to release them. 

The prisoners added that a majority of prisoners who are beaten are from the northern provinces, where soldiers and officers exploit the absence of people or prisoners' relatives  to follow their file cases that they are basically minor cases that do not need to detain them or torture them.

While an official source in Shabwa told NewsYemen that the criminal investigation released drivers of the oil and gas tankers smuggled in exchange for bribes in the past two months without legal justification.

He pointed out that the food provided to prisoners in the prison is not edible, and prisoners are forced to buy meals from restaurants, adding that the soldiers are exploiting the prisoners to raise meals' prices to double.

The source pointed out that officials of the Criminal Investigation Department deal in accordance with financial interests, so that once a person pays money to officers, a victim is imprisoned or is taken without any legal justification, or on charges of malicious.
