The Pentagon announced on Friday that the United States will send about 3,000 additional soldiers to the Middle East from the 82nd Airborne Division as a precautionary measure amid escalating threats to US forces in the region.

Iran has vowed revenge after the United States launched an air strike on Friday that killed Qasim Soleimani, the most prominent military commander in Tehran and the architect of Iran's growing influence in the Middle East.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said that the Rapid Response Force brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division was being deployed.

"The brigade will move to Kuwait as an appropriate precaution, in response to the increased levels of threat to US installations and individuals and will help to recreate the reserve force," the statement said.

These forces will join some 750 soldiers sent to Kuwait earlier this week. Usually, the brigade consists of about 3,500 individuals.

US officials told Reuters this week that thousands of more troops could be sent to the area.

Since May, the United States has sent about 14,000 additional troops to the Middle East.

For its part, the US State Department said in a statement on Friday that the United States included the League of the Righteous League on the list of terrorist organizations with leaders of the Iraqi Shiite armed faction, which it described as an agent of Iran

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Asaib Ahl al-Haq and its leaders are “agents of violence for the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
