United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths, in a hypothetical briefing to the Security Council on Thursday, called for restraint, with reference to military tensions in Socotra and Abyan, and for the government and the Southern Transition to intensify efforts to implement the Riyadh agreement.

Regarding the announcement by the Southern Transitional Council on April 25 that he would take self-management of Aden and the surrounding areas, Griffiths indicated that this raises concern.

He said: The situation is exacerbated by the escalation of military tensions in the south, especially in Abyan and Socotra, calling for immediate restraint and the need for the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council to intensify their efforts to implement the Riyadh agreement urgently.

Griffiths said: "I expect the parties to adopt these agreements so that we pay attention to the next steps. After the agreements are adopted, the parties can resume the political process aimed at concluding an agreement to end the conflict and establish political and security arrangements for a transitional period.

"The transition period will provide Yemen with an opportunity to escape the misery of the conflict and allow a focus on reconstruction, recovery and settlement," Griffiths said, noting that such a future for Yemen is realistic and feasible.
