Prices increased by 67% in legitimate areas within 7 months

The World Food Program said that the cost of the food basket in Yemen increased by 67 percent in areas under the control of the legitimate government, during the first seven months of 2021, recording 9,874 riyals.

In its report, "Monitoring Food Security and Vulnerabilities in Yemen," the World Food Program confirmed that the parallel exchange rate recorded an annual decline of 30 percent in the area under the control of the legitimate government.

The report indicated that the cost of the food basket in Houthi militia-controlled areas recorded an annual increase of 23%.

The minimum food basket, as approved by the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster, consists of: 75 kg of white flour, 10 kg of beans, 8 liters of imported vegetable cooking oil, 2.5 kg of sugar, and one kg of salt added to it.  iodine.

The WFP report indicated that the proportion of households consuming insufficient food needs increased from 36% in June 2020 to 40% in June 2021.

The country has seen a huge rise in the cost of food and other basic necessities, causing many people to resort to harmful practices such as reducing food consumption and even some families sending their children to work or beg to be able to buy food.

According to the "Arab Economic Prospects" report issued by the Arab Monetary Fund, Yemen ranked third in the Arab world in the level of economic inflation after Sudan and Lebanon, as it reached 21.5 during the current year, and is expected to reach 23.5 in the next year 2022.
