On the roof of the memorial to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - erected a plastic figure of the former leader of the group, Saleh Al-Samad, who was killed in April 2018 in an air strike by coalition fighters in Hodeidah governorate, western Yemen, according to the group's
announcement.
The Houthi militia had deliberately buried Al-Samad and his companions in the memorial square of the Unknown Soldier located in Al-Sab’een Square in Sana’a, in the context of its attempts to target and obliterate the features of the revolution and the republic and erase the symbolism of the memorials with symbolic connotations and national struggle dimensions.
The Houthi militia was not satisfied with occupying the place and assassinating its morale as a national symbol for all the martyrs of the Yemeni revolution, and turning it into a grave for the group with sectarian dimensions and sectarian connotations. The place is a sectarian shrine in the Iranian Khomeinist style.
The memorial monument consists of 6 columns embodying the goals of the Yemeni revolution September 26, and on the national holidays of the Yemeni revolution September 26, October 14, and November 30, against the Imamate and British colonialism, a wreath is laid in front of the mausoleum by the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Army.
In September 2021 , the Houthis executed nine people, allegedly convicted by the Houthi militia of killing Saleh al-Samad, who was the head of the Supreme Political Council, who brought together the Houthis and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, before the group overturned the agreement on December 2, 2017.
Citizens in Sanaa considered the Houthi militia’s attempts to obliterate the features and symbolism of the tomb of the unknown soldier in Al-Saba’een Square in Sana’a, as part of an organized scheme aimed at erasing a republic’s national identity. (September 26 - October 14 - November 30).
