Al-Eissi ships surround the coast of Aden with an environmental disaster

The Humanitarian Press Foundation (Hjf) revealed, on Tuesday, a new investigation, through its series of investigations, into the environmental disaster threatening the coasts of Aden, which began with complaints from fishermen after an oil spill from dilapidated ships.

 The new investigation revealed that the 12 tankers and ships belonging to the Overseas Company for the merchant Ahmed Al-Eissi, which caused the dilapidated disaster and threatened to sink in the coasts of Aden, are expired, unregistered, have no knowledge, and do not have work permits, and they are (sub-standard) ships.  By law, they are considered ships that are completely unsuitable for sailing, as they pose a grave danger to maritime security and maritime safety.

The investigation said that private sources in the General Authority for Maritime Affairs confirmed that the 12 ships had expired, were unregistered, had no knowledge, did not have work permits, and had been suspended from sea navigation since before the March 2015 war, and were illegally used as floating fuel tanks.  Only one of the ships contained 90 metric tons of mazout.

It is strange that the authorities concerned have not moved until the moment, as the investigation confirmed that to this day the wreck of the DIA ship is still submerged in the same place, and it has not been recovered yet.  There are also many dilapidated single-hull ships in the area of throwing the anchor at Aden International Port, the presence of which poses an environmental threat and threatens the safety of maritime navigation.

 The Pearl of Athena

 The Pearl of Athens, a chemical products tanker (oil), stopped in the anchorage area of the port of Aden on August 23, 2015, while the oil tanker “Amira Al Bahar 2” stopped in the anchorage area of the port of Aden on May 29, 2015.

Seychem Phenol

 Seychem Phenol or a chemical/oil products tanker stopped in the dumping area of Aden port in June 2017, and the Crescent Petroleum tanker stopped on June 23.

 ISTANBUL 1

 The oil tanker Istanbul 1 imo: 8417936 stopped in the dumping area of the port of Aden in October 2015 after 36 years of service.

CORAL Marjan:

 The ship (Coral - Marjan) is a dilapidated tanker with a quantity of (90 metric tons of diesel fuel) inside. It is one of the 12 dilapidated ships that are threatened with sinking off the coast of Aden. It was built in 1990 and stopped on March 27, 2015.

 The report pointed out that one of the common factors in all the ships owned by Al-Eissi Group parked in the dumping area in the port of Aden is the great age of these ships and their loss of insurance and classification for many years.

Report to the Attorney General

 The "Hjf" Foundation considered the latest investigation and what preceded it as a communication to the Public Prosecutor, Judge Qaher Mustafa, calling for the formation of a committee to investigate the disaster and the parties responsible for it, as well as the lenient competent authorities.

They called on civil society organizations and lawyers in Aden to file a lawsuit against the competent authorities on charges of betrayal of responsibility and complicity with the merchant Al-Issa, based on Article (165) of the Republican Decree Law No. 12 of 1994 regarding crimes and penalties.

It is reported that the ship DIA-1 sank in the dumping area in the port of Aden on July 17, 2021, causing pollution to the marine environment.  The reason for its sinking was that it stopped working for several years, its hull was worn out, and it did not undergo any periodic maintenance during its hiatus, which led to holes in the hull of the ship and the flow of sea water through these holes into its tanks and engine rooms.  Part of the pollution is at the bottom of the sea, and the other part has moved to the coasts of the Al-Haswa, Al-Khisa, Barberia and Kod Al-Nimr districts in the Buriqa districts.
