Report: Houthi militia tops the list of violators of press freedoms

 In a new report, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate monitored twenty-eight cases of violations against journalists and media institutions during the third quarter of this year.

The Houthi militia, the Iranian arm in Yemen, topped the list of violating parties with thirteen cases of the total violations monitored from the beginning of July until the end of last September, at a rate of fifty percent.

The Syndicate stated that these violations against journalists and media institutions were during the period from July 1 to the end of September 2021, and among the violations, “8 cases of kidnapping, arrest and prosecution accounted for 29% of the total violations, and 4 cases of torture of journalists in detention at 14% 4 cases of denial of medical care and health care for kidnappers by 14%, 4 cases of threats and incitement against journalists by 14%, 3 cases of prevention of photography and confiscation of photographers’ cameras by 11%, two cases of suspension of media outlets by 7%, and two cases of raids on journalists’ homes by 7% , and one case was suspended from work.

According to the union, the Houthis committed "13 cases of violations of the total number of violations at a rate of 50%, while the government in its various formations and bodies committed 8 cases at a rate of 28%, and forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council committed 3 cases at a rate of 11%, while unknown parties committed 3 cases at a rate of 11%."

 The 8 cases of detention and prosecution were divided into 3 cases of prosecution of journalists, representing 37.5% of the total detention of freedom, and two cases of kidnapping at a rate of 25%, in addition to two cases of arrest at a rate of 25%, and a case of arrest at a rate of 12.5%," according to the syndicate.

The union said that press freedoms are still living in a critical situation, with the continued state of violence and hostility towards the press and journalists from all sides. In this context, he called for the release of all kidnapped journalists and the dropping of the unjust death sentences against journalists Abdul-Khaleq Omran, Tawfiq Al-Mansoori, Akram Al-Waleedy and Harith Hamid, and an end to the suffering of their families and the punishment of all those who caused their suffering, which is entering its seventh year.
